We are Dragonfly and Fox class!
Welcome to the Year 1 class page.
We have two classes in Year 1, Dragonfly and Fox class. Mrs Hetherington is class teacher in Dragonfly class, and Miss Canty is class teacher in Fox class. We are supported by Mrs Baker, Mrs Siddalls and Miss Kearley. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Mrs Siddalls (HLTA) teaches Dragonfly class in the afternoons. On a Thursday, Mrs Parsons (HLTA) teaches Fox class in the afternoons.

You can come to school wearing your PE kit on these days.
Reading books are changed weekly on a Monday.

Spring 1 - Why does it matter where my food comes from?
This term our topic has a Geography focus. We will be developing our geographic skills, we will learning about where our food comes from, how it is produced an why Devon is a great place for Dairy Farmer.
We follow Read, Write, Inc. for our phonics learning. We are learning our Set 2 and 3 sounds and using these to read and spell words.

By the end of Year 1, children are expected to be able to read and write a set of Common Exception words. These are words that do not follow regular spelling patterns and are not phonetically decodable. The image below is the list of these words.
English is taught daily with a strong focus on providing high quality texts that inspire and motivate. This term our key texts are: 'Mixed up Fairy Tales' by Hilary Robinson and Nick Sharratt and 'Tell Me a Dragon' by Jackie Morris. We will learn both texts and explore adapting them with our own ideas. We will be practicing using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in our writing. We will also learn about how we can use the conjunction 'and' to join sentences together.
At our school, our handwriting is taught in cursive. In Year 1, we learn our 'lead-in' lines so we are ready to join our writing in Year 2. Please follow the link below to LetterJoin website and use the login provided on Dojo:
As a school we follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning and we have a focus on teaching for Mastery. This half term we will be learning about Place value to 50 and Addition and Subtraction.
