Why is water so precious?
In English the children will be looking at poetry. They will use descriptive language and onomatopoeic words to write water poems. The children will then look at a bean diary and learn about the different stages of a growing plant. The children will plant their own beans and write their own diaries, documenting their growth. Finally, the children will look at a story from another culture (Fatu Fetch the Water). They will use Talk4Writing techniques to learn the story and then write their own version.
In Maths the children will be learning about multiplication and division. The children will learn different strategies to solve different problems involving multiplication and division. The children will then be learning about fractions. They will be finding halves and quarters of both numbers and shapes, using different strategies to do this.
In Science, the children will be learning about plants and trees. The children will be investigating the importance of water to both plants and trees as well as identifying the parts of a plant. The children will be planting their own seeds and observing the changes that happen as they grow.
In Geography, the children will find out about the different bodies of water in our local area and trying to identify these on a map or satellite image. The children will then be looking at the geographical location and climate of our local area and comparing this to that of a town in Gambia (linked to our story in English). The children will be investigating the similarities and differences of the two towns.
In Art the children will be using different techniques such as marbling to create water effects. They will then be looking at the work of different artists (Monet) exploring how they used water colour to create different scenes. The children will also be having a go at creating their own sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.
In RE the children will be investigating symbols. They will be looking at what symbols they can find in their local church and exploring the meaning of them. Over the term, the children will be visiting church and talking to Reverend Robert to find out more.
