Our topic this term is:
Children in Year 2 had a very exciting parcel delivered on the first day of term... All the way from China, we received a box containing a mystical and precious dragon egg. The children have been trusted as guardians of the egg and were eager to collect materials from the playground to make a cosy nest to keep it safe. There was lots of excitement in class as the children talked about what could possibly hatch out of it!
While children continue to apply their phonic knowledge when reading and writing, there is now a greater emphasis on the teaching of Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar. Children will continue to develop their understanding of common exception words and alternative spelling patterns, whilst also learning how to use basic punctuation (including commas, question marks and apostrophes) and write grammatically correct sentences.
In Maths lessons, children are developing their understanding of multiplication and division, and the inverse relationship between them. They will also be learning to recognise, name and write fractions relating to length, shape and quantity. Children are continuing to practise the fast recall of multiplication and division facts for the 10, 5 and 2 times tables.
In topic lessons, children have been learning about the home of dragons… China! We had great fun learning about Chinese New Year and made bright and colourful dragon puppets in celebration. Over the next couple of weeks, children will be learning to read maps before creating their own for the Land of Dragons. They will also be investigating animal habitats and will be using the outdoor environment to make a home for our class dragon.
