This terms topic in Year 1 is:
This term the children in year 1 are learning about different stories. In English, the children will be learning three different stories; Little Red Riding Hood. The Gingerbread Man and the Runaway Chapatti. The children will be looking at the different language used in these stories and comparing them with one another. The children will be using Talk 4 Writing to learn the stories, using story maps and actions. The children will look at the different characters and settings in the stories and use adjectives to describe them. The children will use their knowledge of the stories to write their own story, based around the Gingerbread Man and the Runaway Chapatti.
In maths, the children will focus on addition and subtraction. The children will look at different strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems, as well as representing these in different ways. The children will use bar models, ten frames, part part whole models and number lines to help them solve problems. The children will look at the relationship to between addition and subtraction number sentences and investigating different fact families. The children will use language such as greater than, less than and equal to to compare addition and subtraction statements.
In RE, the children are learning all about creation. The children will think about what the creator of our world is like. They will use the story of ‘In the Beginning’ and use actions and make props to help them retell it. The children will think about why our world was created and why the creator gave us the seventh day to rest.
In topic, the children will be looking at the British Isles and locating the four countries and their capital cities. In design technology, the children will be making puppets based on the stories we are learning. In science, the children are looking at materials, investigating which material would be best to use to make their puppets.
